Big data delivering efficiencies, greater visibility for WA Department of Education

Building a data lake, and extracting true business value and insights from it, is easier said than done.

These solutions require careful analysis and consultation with your organisation beyond the IT department. When done well, fantastic outcomes can be achieved.

For example, more than 10,000 hours of work have been saved for Western Australian teachers through solutions leveraging big data. This is due to the near real-time collation and cross-referencing of different data sources to provide intelligence and insights into the operations of the WA Department of Education’s environment.

Big data delivering efficiencies for public education

Big data

As part of the department’s mandatory census requirements, this public sector agency had to conduct an annual ICT audit across the state’s more than 800 schools. Traditionally this was a time-consuming manual process, performed by teachers.

The Kinetic IT team identified the ICT audit as an opportunity to leverage transformative technology solutions and give back precious time and resources so educators could focus on teaching and learning.

Kinetic IT partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop an automated audit process that eliminates the manual, months-long process of counting devices around each school, and meant the audit was completed in a matter of days instead of weeks.

AWS and Fortinet networks provided the tools to allow rapid prototyping and development, as well as the throughput required to collect, anonymise, encrypt, and compress data from over 340,000 devices daily. This resulted in more than 230 million rows of data per day being ingested into the customer’s data lake.

The system has been in place for more than four years, and continues to provide valuable data and insights – with an annual AWS operating cost of less than $50,000.
